Tel Aviv district - general information

The District of Tel Aviv encompasses 18 local authorities and is located in the centre of the country. It is a distinctively urban district, which covers Israel's largest and most densely populated metropolis and outlying areas. The district spreads from Moshav Rishpon in the north to the southern borders of the cities Holon and Bat Yam. Its eastern border begins at the edge of Petah Tikva and continues along Geha Road, Or Yehuda and Yehud. The western border is 25 km on the Mediterranean coastline.

Although the Tel Aviv district is geographically the smallest in the country, it is the most densely populated district in Israel. There are 3100 members in the District Police Force (of whom a third are women). They daily police the population of 1.2 million people living in the District, as well as an additional million people who come into the district each day for work, shopping and entertainment - altogether a third of the Israeli population.

The District comprises a large number of government offices, foreign embassies, media centres (head offices of the main newspapers, radio, television and cable stations), financial and business centres, stock exchange and banks as well as sport, cultural and entertainment centres (museums, stadiums, parks, restaurants, nightclubs, pubs etc.) The Tel Aviv District also hosts large sporting and entertainment events, demonstrations and protests, all which cause growing transportation problems and a serious lack of parking space.

The beaches are full of local citizens as well as many visitors and tourists and the three main harbours - Tel Aviv, Jafa and Herzliya - show a growing movement of Israeli and foreign ships.

Due to the fact that this District is a non-stop urban centre, in addition to local criminals, it attracts criminals from all over the country (Anonymous Crime).

The Tel Aviv District is characterized by the many types of crime with which it has to deal: - public safety and order, enforcement of traffic laws, the fighting and prevention of crime, fraud, white collar felonies, street crime and violence, alcohol, drugs, prostitution, gambling clubs, blackmail, threats, car theft, burglaries and felonies which involve environmental and life-quality issues (noise, pollution etc). The dynamics and urban nature of the District demand the full-time presence of a well trained police force.

The District includes four sub-districts, two police stations and community policing centres.
